BACK TO SCHOOL
I am a mom, but I was a kid for about 18 years and those three words are the bane of all existence, unless you are or were a kid like me. 12 weeks of watching Sally Jesse Raphael or the Oliver North Trials were just too much for me. I needed my friends, order, choir… I wanted to go back to school.
The unfortunate reality for kids this day is that they might never know the deep trenches of summer boredom like we did. Rarely did a kid have an Atari with permission to play 24/7 No! The mom rationed out video game time like sugar vouchers during the depression.
We had chores! Lots of them! Like weeding a garden in 100 degree weather, feeding the animals, dusting the house and making my bed. Enter imagination and creativity. Seriously, what is more awesome than donning your Snowsuit the blasting heat of August in Osage County, Oklahoma. Hiding in the snake filled woods and shooting at each other with bb guns? NOTHING.
We were probably more dehydrated than any kid in the 21st century, but when thirst came, there was either a creek or hose to drink from. Why didn’t we just fill up in the kitchen, you ask? Because grownups locked the screen door and told kids to play outside till the street lights came on, or in my rural reality, when the moon came out!
What did this do for me?? Creativity, Problem Solving, Praying the snake didn’t bite me and working out issues with the neighborhood kids. Somehow, my childhood, as unsupervised as it was, prepared me for life as an adult, and I will always be grateful for it!
Praying for you as you prepare for this next season. Praying for the kids going back to school. Praying that Jesus is lifted high in your life!
Isaiah 54:13 All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.
